Start of motion and gear shifting

In a driver's foot well there should be no extraneous subjects, capable to limit freedom of moving of pedals! When using supernumerary rugs or mats it is necessary to provide a sufficient course of pedals.

Full load of the engine should be given only after its preliminary warming up to normal working temperature which during movement occurs quickly enough.

At a troganiye from a place on a slippery paving avoid a long provorachivaniye any of wheels as it can lead to damage of the power unit.

The scheme of gear shifting is put on a face surface of the handle of the lever of gear shifting.

Gear shifting during movement make according to technical characteristics of transmission, - try not to allow excessive increase of turns. Data on high-speed modes of gear shifting are provided in Specifications to the present Chapter.

Inclusion of transfer of a backing should be made only after a full stop of the car, - before inclusion the handle of the lever should be pulled up.

At movement on a slippery paving it is necessary to avoid braking by transmission as it can lead to loss of coupling of wheels with the road! Remember that braking by the engine is always connected with the sharp increase of its turns fraught with serious internal damages of the power unit.

Models from 5-step AT

Gear shifting during movement of the car is made automatically depending on chosen position of the lever of the AT selector, position of the switch of programs, extent of squeezing of a pedal of gas and the current speed of movement.

Switchings of automatic transmission automatically adapt for an individual manner of driving, at the expense of correction of the moments of gear shifting. Process of adaptation goes continuously taking into account the current values of working parameters of the power unit, movement characteristics, and also actions of the driver. To change of characteristics of movement AT reacts the adapted program of gear shifting.

Before a start of motion squeeze out a pedal of a foot brake for removal of blocking of the lever of the AT selector, then release the parking brake and switch the selector lever in one of movement provisions (see below). Wait complete inclusion of transfer (in particular at the cold engine), then release a foot brake and squeeze out a gas pedal.

Remember that before final warming up of the engine gear shifting is made at slightly raised turns that provides the accelerated warming up of the catalytic converter to normal working temperature.

At movement it is necessary to mean that the easy pressing a pedal of gas provides earlier switching of transmission on an overgear while by strong pressing of switching occur later.

Squeezing of a pedal of gas to a floor (with overcoming of a point of resistance) brings to automatic switching of AT on a low gear (kickdown mode), providing the car the increased dynamic qualities. At an otpuskaniye of a pedal there is a transmission return on higher transfer answering to characteristics of the current high-speed mode.

At a temporary stop do not deduce the selector lever from situation "D" and by means of the foot or parking brake insure the car from the progress caused by a land relief.

When maneuvering in limited space regulate speed of movement by a gradual otpuskaniye of a foot brake. Try to squeeze out slightly a pedal of gas and not to "play" it.

At trailer towage in the hilly district choose modes of restriction of AT (3 or 2, depending on a steepness of slopes), on especially dangerous sites include a movement mode on off road terrain of LOW RANGE.

The lever of the selector of ranges of transmission can be in one of eight fixed provisions). Start of the engine is possible only in the positions "P" or "N" of the lever. If the stop is made, when AT is in one of movement "D", "4", "3", "2", "1", "R" ranges, or in the mode "N", it is necessary to release completely a pedal of gas and to squeeze out a brake pedal for reliable braking of the car.

When switching AT move the lever along a directing groove. At key extraction from the ignition lock the lever of the selector is blocked in the situation "R". In this case the lever conclusion from the situation "R" is impossible even when squeezing a brake pedal. In order to avoid breakage of AT transfer the lever to the situation "R" only after a full stop of the car.

Key extraction from the lock of ignition becomes possible only after transfer of the lever of the selector to the situation "R" and an otpuskaniye of a pedal of a foot brake.

Standard ranges

Situation "R". In this position of the lever of the selector the blocking of the transmission providing additional protection of the parked car is made. Always transfer the selector lever to the situation "R" at switching off or engine start. To deduce the lever of the selector of ranges from the situation "R", it is necessary to squeeze out a brake pedal, previously having released a gas pedal. Reject the selector lever to the right and deduce it from the situation "R".

Situation "R". Receptions of management by the lever of the selector of ranges at its transfer from the situation "R" in the situation "R" (Backing) are described above. Turning on of the lever in the situation "R" from the situation "N" (Neutral) make only after a full stop of the car. If the backing does not join after a full stop of the car, squeeze out a pedal of a foot brake and slowly move the selector lever at first to the situation "N", then in the situation "R".

Situation "N". Use the situation "N" (Neutral) at start of the decayed engine under way and at short stops of the car with working engine. If for any reason it is necessary for you to depart from the car, previously transfer the lever of the selector of ranges to the situation "R". At a lever conclusion of the situation "N" squeeze out a pedal of a foot brake.

Transfer of transmission to the situation "N" during movement is connected with risk of serious internal damages of a transmission! Use this situation only at threat of drift of the car at movement on a slippery paving.

Situation "D". In this situation the lever of the selector of ranges should be constantly at car movement in normal road conditions, - automatic switching of AT between five transfers of a forward course according to changes of a high-speed mode and extent of squeezing of a pedal of gas is provided. For sharp dispersal of the car at transmission work in a range of "D", «4» or «3» squeeze out a gas pedal against the stop. Thus the transmission will automatically be switched to adjacent lowest transfer (kickdown mode). If speed of the car is insignificant, switching can occur at once on two steps down.

On release models till 31.08.99 the provision of restriction of ranges of switching (4, 3, 2 and 1) also enter into number of the standard.

Ranges for movement in special conditions

At the transmission included in situation "D" possibility of its switching in ranges for movement in special conditions («4», «3», «2» and «1») is provided.

The easy otzhimaniye of the lever to the left («D-») leads to transition to an adjacent lowering range of AT. When keeping lever in the situation "D-" transmission switching in a range, providing optimum dynamic qualities of the car according to active current transfer is made. Information on change of ranges is deduced in an indicator field on the tachometer dial, to the left of the display of hours.

At a lever otzhimaniye in the situation "D-" during movement with excessively high speed switching of a mode of transmission is blocked for the purpose of prevention of inadmissible increase of turns of the engine.

Otzhimaniye of the lever in situation «+» leads D to transition of transmission in adjacent about flowing higher range. Lever keeping in situation «D +» allows to carry out return to a standard mode "D".

Situation "4". If the lever of the selector of ranges is included in the provision "4", the automatic transmission functions similar to a case of inclusion of a range of "D". Difference consists that transition to the fifth transfer is excluded.

Situation "3". In set situation in motion switchings of transmission is limited to the third transfer. The mode can be used for implementation of braking by the engine. Inclusion of a range «3» is useful also for an exception of superfluous cyclic switchings of automatic transmission between the third and fourth transfers, - similar cyclic switchings of a transmission can be observed, for example, at movement in a dense transport stream with frequent delays and stops.

Situation "2". At inclusion of a range «2» automatic transmission will constantly work at the second transfer. It is recommended to use this restriction at trailer towage in the hilly district or for implementation of braking by the engine on descent of a considerable steepness. At a car stop the transmission does not pass to the first transfer. Continuous inclusion of the second transfer provides good traction dynamics of the car on liftings and possibility of intensive braking with the engine on abrupt descents. The range «2» can be used also at a troganiye from a place on a slippery paving, or at movement on deep snow, helping to prevent strong pro-slipping of driving wheels of the car. It is recommended to use a range «2» at movement on abrupt passes, at trailer towage in the hilly district, and also for braking by the engine on especially abrupt descents.

Situation "1". At inclusion of a range «1» automatic transmission will constantly work at the first transfer. If inclusion of a range «1» is made for the speed more than 50 km/h, transmission at first will be switched to the second transfer. Inclusion of an intermediate step allows to exclude sharp and unexpected braking by the engine. The mode can be used at movement with the trailer on especially abrupt descents and long passes.

Emergency operation

Deterioration of dynamic characteristics and refusal of transmission of switchings testify to transition of transmission to emergency operation of functioning. The probability of switching on the 2nd transfer or backing transfer is not excluded.

In a similar situation it is necessary to stop movement, to park in a safe place, to transfer the selector lever to the situation "R" and to muffle the engine.

Having waited for not less than 10 seconds, again start the engine and transfer the selector lever to situation "D" - the 2nd transfer will join. Transfer of the lever to the situation "R" leads to inclusion of transfer of a backing.

The car should be driven away immediately on the next car repair shop Mercedes-Benz for carrying out detailed diagnostics of AT and performance of necessary regenerative repair.
